Have just installed Cogs (bought as part of a bundle - Cipher Prime...). Problem is that it runs painfully slowly.

For example, if I hover the mouse over a button on the initial screen (say, the "Inventor Mode" button) it takes 4-5 seconds for the button to light up, and then if I click on the button , it takes about 15 seconds for the "Select Puzzle" screen to fully appear (and it does so in a series of jumps). Maybe this is normal, but to me it seems incredibly slow and un-responsive.

I've pasted the minimum system requirements from the FAQ page below:

Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP or Vista
Processor: 1.5 GHz CPU or better
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Hard disk space: 120 MB
Video: DirectX 9 compatible 64 MB graphics card with hardware transform and lighting (T&L)
Sound: DirectX compatible sound card
DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c or later

From running DirectX Diagnostic Tool on my PC, the relevant bits of the output are:

Operating System: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (5.2, Build 3790) Service Pack 2 (3790.srv03_sp2_gdr.100216-1301)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) III Xeon processor (2 CPUs), ~2.5GHz
Memory: 2038MB RAM

I've just installed the latest display driver, and my PC specs seem to well exceed the minimum requirements. Also I've ensured hardware acceleration is enabled (set to Full) in the Advanced Settings dialog of Display Properties.

Any ideas about what the problem might be and how to remedy it would be gratefully accepted...

Chip type: Intel(R) GMA 3100

Unfortunately, even though you have a powerful machine with the latest OS, the integrated graphics card isn't powerful enough to do the vertex and pixel processing.  Here's the description of the card from wikipedia:

The G31, G33, Q33 and Q35 chipsets use the GMA 3100, which is DirectX 9 capable. The 3D core is very similar to the older GMA 3000, including the lack of hardware accelerated vertex shaders.

As of a couple weeks ago, there is another option: Cogs GO is now available at the Intel AppUp store.

You can try out the lite version for free:

Cogs GO is specifically designed for machines that don't have high-end graphic cards.  The graphics aren't quite as nice, but it has all the same puzzles.
