Cogs.exe crashes immediately after launching.

Hi,

I just bought the game from Direct2Drive. 

After installation, whenever I try launching, cogs.exe crashes immediately with the following message: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).  Click OK to terminate the application."

My computer's stats:

• Windows Vista SP1
• Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz
• 3GB RAM
• Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT

My install folder is C:\Programs\Cogs.

If needed, I would be happy to try out a debug version of the game to help isolate the issue and solve it for me.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hey, soja -

That error message isn't coming from the Cogs binary, so it sounds like either some driver isn't cooperating or cogs.exe is corrupted.  If it exists, can you send C:\Programs\Cogs\log.txt to rob@lazy8studios.com.  That will help me figure out what may be going wrong.  If the log file doesn't exist, then the binary is very likely corrupted and you may want to check your hard drive.

Hmmm..  I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on (or why, rather).

The system is detecting a buffer overflow exception (BEX) and DEP is terminating cogs.exe.  I checked my DEP settings, and they're the default.  I tried it on another computer with the same settings, and it runs fine.  I tried reinstalling.  The setup program checks integrity, and I verified the MD5 hash is the same each time as well.  I updated my video drivers (and all others as well).  I checked for viruses.  I performed hardware diagnostics for en entire day and everything (memory, HDD, power, etc) turned out fine, and my computer seems to be running OK anyway.  At least I'm not having problems with anything else.

Perhaps this is a lot of effort to spend on one game, but I guess I want to figure out if there really is something wrong with my computer anyway.

Cogs.exe does not get far enough to right any sort of log.  This is almost assuredly an init issue.

Can you help further please?

Sorry for taking so long to reply.  This fell of my radar.

Is it possible that you installed Cogs in a really deep nonstandard directory?  I suppose that might theoretically create a long path name that could induce buffer overflow.  Considering that you're doing MD5 checksums on the binaries, you clearly know what you're doing, so I'm out of ideas.

Thanks for the offer.  As it turns out, I'm chalking it up to some software issue.  I reinstalled the OS and now it runs fine.  So that's great, but unfortunately, we'll never know why it didn't run in the first place.  =\
