Cogs / Antialiasing and LOLspeak Ready for Testing
« on: May 21, 2009, 06:54:59 PM »
We've been hard at work preparing a new patch for Cogs that adds antialiasing, in-game language selection and hopefully fixes a rare shader bug that a few users are seeing.  Now all we need to do is get a few beta testers to make sure that everything looks okay before we make it live.  So if you're comfortable unzipping files without an installer and you'd like an advance preview of the new features (including a bonus LOLspeak language pack), check this out:

Whether it works or fails, it would be great if you can drop me a line to let me know that you've tried it out.  If you attach cogs\log.txt, that will give me more info about your hardware and potential bugs.

Cogs / "Error while caching params for d"
« on: May 08, 2009, 09:10:29 AM »
A few users have reported seeing this error, so I'm working on a fix.  I have a new version that is mostly working for some users, but the more testers I can get, the better.  If you want to try it out, send me an email at and include your computer specs -- especially the graphics card that you're using.

Cogs Beta (Closed) / Cogs Patch: Tone-Deaf Players Rejoice
« on: April 08, 2009, 03:44:11 PM »
Hey, Cogs testers -

You've been giving great feedback, so we've tried to squeeze as many of your suggestions as possible into the final release candidate, which you'll see next time you launch the game.

  - Accessibility: Tune hints for deaf and tone-deaf players
    (cheat code "TuneHintsOn/TuneHintsOff")
  - Moved the award details to the back side of the level description widget.
(One less click to play and award data accessible from pause screen)
  - Fixed music skip at startup.
  - Larger streaming audio buffers = less music skipping
  - Accessibility: Colorblind-friendlier balloon and steam colors
  - Higher contrast on highlighted buttons
  - Final sounds and artwork for all levels
  - Upgrade from demo to full version with no extra download.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback and encouragement.  On Tuesday, April 14, Cogs will be available worldwide, so tell your friends!

Hey, Beta Testers -

We've been hard at work making Cogs shinier than ever.  Some time today, your version of Cogs should update itself with the latest patch.

 - Cool new success screen
 - New menu music
 - New time challenge music
 - Tons of new sounds
 - Shinier materials
 - Final artwork for ~96% of puzzles
 - New models
 - Game icon
 - New "mystats" cheat code
 - Lock challenge mode on first launch
 - Other misc. bug fixes

Curious how much total time you've spent playing Cogs?  Try out the new "mystats" cheat code.

As always, keep the comments rolling here and via email.

Cogs Beta (Closed) / Achievements Update
« on: March 10, 2009, 01:51:41 PM »
Hey, Beta Testers -

You can now use the Steam client to view the Cogs achievements you've earned.  You'll find them under the "Community" tab.  If you then click "My Control Panel" or "View my Profile," you'll see a link to your Cogs stats in the right-hand column.

We already know that the Apprentice achievement is broken.  That will be fixed with the next patch.

Cogs Beta (Closed) / Cogs Patch: March 4, 2009
« on: March 04, 2009, 05:24:59 PM »
Hey, Beta Testers -

Your feedback has been terrific!  Your input has driven a number of changes that will help make Cogs great.  I just submitted some changes to Steam, which means that if your Steam client is running, your version of the game should get patched automatically as soon as the new files become active.

  - Tons of new sounds
  - Improved support for older graphics cards
  - Timing fixes for multi-core systems
  - Minimize on alt+tab
  - Improved memory management
  - Fixed duplicate achievement notification bug
  - Fixed pipes that were missing steam emitters
  - Open levels with double-click
  - Hold shift key on launch for verbose debug data
  - New art for disk levels and various smaller art improvements here and there

If the game has been running smoothly for you, hopefully it will continue to do so.  For the few of you who are getting a crash on startup or a message saying that your hardware doesn't support the game (even when you think it should), try holding down the shift key as you launch the game.  This will force the game to start in verbose mode.  If you can send me the output that you see on the console window, it will help me to track down any problems.  This is documented with other hints in the Guide for Cogs Beta Testers at

Keep the feedback coming, both by email and right here on the Discussion Forum.
