Title: Biont Hunters' Club - Island #1
Post by: jim on May 20, 2014, 09:45:39 AM
HERE BE SPOILERS. TURN BACK ALL THOSE OF A WEAK HEART OR INCOMPLETE STORY.

Still here? Good.

Hey all,

I wanted to create a place to compare notes on what we have identified and where we found them.

So far I have

35 Photobionts
6 Motobionts
Am I missing anything?

Post by: DemosMirak on May 20, 2014, 09:59:28 AM
I have 34 and 5 respectively, so I would not know. We could have different combinations though, that I am missing other species than you.

Edit: Missing Spade Burrower and Sail Flyer so far. I by the way, do have an unspecified motobiont. As far as I know, the only place to catch that one is in the 'seashot'

Edit 2: Sorry for the slightly late response, my main RSS feed did not catch the edit.
Anyway, of the photobionts I am missing the bulbmoss

Hang on, I'll add the full list!

[EDIT] full list added.

Anyway, I miss the spade burrower, sail flyer and bulbmoss. The sail flyer I have seen in the air, but I have never gotten close enough to actually be able to tag it. Got any hints and tips for those three?

Bulbmoss I found to the east of Mt Jemison. almost exactly half way between the mountain and the Obelisk.

The best Sail Flyer photos I got were looking out over the cliffs to the north of the EM Transmission Source.

Spade Burrowers are a tougher find.  I have a bunch of photos (taken mainly in the north-most quarter of the island), but I'm not sure I would have spotted them without using the IR camera.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they are not actually that rare, just difficult to spot. I wonder how many of my photos they appear that I haven't noticed?

There is one in the middle of this photo: https://extrasolar.com/photo/78pwOlXyJZvsN07dclImyA

Is the Spade Burrower the grey thing with some spines sticking out of it, lying in front of the rock?

And thanks for the tips, I will put it on my to-do list, right after I clear up all the fogy spots on the map.

Hi DemosMirak,

Yep, that's a Spade Burrower at rest. I've found them most commonly in the northeastern parts of Artocos Island, though I've found them sporadically in other areas too. I have an interesting photo of an apparently rare encounter between two of them but which I'll have to upload and post later...

To augment jim's comments about the other denizens, Van Susteren's advice about where to find Sail Flyers is spot on... they favor high winds, so can be found near ocean cliffsides. They are diurnal, so you can only see them during daylight hours (though they also are active during transition hours, dawn and sunset).

The Bulbmoss can be found only in a single small area, as jim described. They are bioluminescent, so can be spotted easily in low light conditions.

===

I'm of a slightly different opinion than Van Susteren on a couple of the "biont" classifications, but that's a separate discussion... ;)

Ainia, do the 35 / 6 numbers match up with what you have found? I'm secretly hoping I have much more to discover...

Hi jim,

Yes, your list matches what I've found (though I've been deliberately dawdling with finishing the storyline, so haven't encountered the unidentified Biont yet).

Here's that Spade Burrower pic I promised:

My God, Sir, you are a Spade Burrower?  Welcome to our august company (actually it's december for me).

But surely it is OK, they still have their shells on?

Bulbmoss I found to the east of Mt Jemison. almost exactly half way between the mountain and the Obelisk.

This is the area I have scoured for it.

I'm suspecting the area where you find them may be smaller than I assumed  ;).

Oop, I think jim must have meant *west* of the mountain. DemosMirak, judging from your map, it looks like you made a short stop in the right valley... you might want to review the photo from that particular stop.
Check the area halfway between the mountain flag and the obelisk on the *left*
I think I found the last one (analysis is still pending)
See if you can spot it (you probably can, I did, after all. By the way, the picture is classified, by the way, just a heads-up)

I still going around the island but have found all the motobionts and 32 of the 34 photobionts listed.  However we are told there is an unidentified motobiont so seems we should add this.  Also, and I'm just being impatient, but I just sent in images for three photobionts and awaiting analysis.  They are all very distinctive and if they come back as separate species then that will be one more.  Also where I took the three photobiont photo,  there are two, maybe three others that I don't recognize from posted pictures of existing species.  I printed off a list with photos of all the species that I've seen so far so that's my checklist.  So I have three pending and three still to come that don't match images of the 34 photobionts that I have to date.  So there might be more than 34.  I will update.
Title: Re: Biont Hunters' Club - Island #1
Post by: kmscouts on August 27, 2014, 07:14:34 PM
My last post was premature.  As we all know now, that last species rich image is the main end of this stage of the game.  Susteren will not ID any of the three images sent saying she has too little information.  Too bad as there are a number of new species in that image.  So ignoring those I have all the motobionts listed above and 32 of the 34 photobionts.  So I was just moving around trying to find the two species I needed plus maybe complete some badges but there are apparently a number of those and I only have a few.   So after a short I am not logging on as much and then went 4-5 days not logging in.  Susteren comes back and says there are still species to see.  She says "Unviewed Species:  6".   So it looks like the 34 above is also missing 4 species but we don't know if they are motobionts or photobionts.  So with 6 species to find then I'll keep looking unless it continues to be futile.

Well after searching the island for multiple more trips, I realize that I am not going to find any thing extra.  I am still missing the SAIL IRIS if anyone can give me a clue as to where you've seen it.

As I mentioned before Susteren's email told me that I had 6 unviewed species but based on the list in this message thread which also coincides with the species list on the Wiki site - I was only missing two, of which I found one (Collared Boa).  So I think when I find the Sand Iris I will have them all and Susteren's email was incorrect.  Once I find the Sand Iris, I would love to drive around and complete badges but that's so random and I have no idea what I need to do that I'll stop visiting.  Hopefully after x days of inactivity Susteren will return to tell me that I still have x number of species unviewed.

I have added some money to the campaign for the next level so hope that will help move it forward.

So thanks in advance to anyone who can help me find the SAIL IRIS.

Hey Kevin, big apologies for not noticing this before, but I believe you're misinterpreting Jane's email.  She's just saying there's six species on your "Discoveries" page that you haven't clicked on and read the description of.  I can see how that would be confusing.

Sail Iris tend to be found in the same areas as Scaled Ancients, if that helps at all. ;)  Thanks for the Kickstarter pledge!

@KathAveara
I'm not talking about complexity, I'm talking about overall shape. It is very contrast with overall body lines and color, have no other similar structures anywhere on it's body, almost like it was jammed in creature's head. Other motobionts have no similar structures either. The difference between this and brains is that brains are squishy, gray, and definitely organic. Even if these things would be analogs of horns of some sort, horns are too organic in their shape and color. This one is square, straight, have hole in it's base and looks metallic in texture.
does that looks like a natural object to you? Nature doesn't produce square bones.
Title: Re: Biont Hunters' Club - Island #1
Post by: KathAveara on November 09, 2014, 03:59:18 AM
Oops, I thought you were talking about the eyes. My bad.

Yes, it looks natural to me. Just because something doesn't happen here on Earth is the worst reason in the universe for something not happening on another planet. I mean, seriously. I recall a story that the best candidate for life on Mars (at the time) was rejected on that ground that it resembled nothing like life on Earth (it was later proven to be an artifact of the methods used for examining the object). The moral of the story is that you must throw out all preconceptions about what is possible and what is not before you dive into exobiology.

That aside, the structure looks remarkably like the stirrup bone in the human inner ear, just without the base. The stirrup bone also has a hole in the middle, half of the bone is roughly square (more square than the eyestalk!) and is much tinier. There are other square-ish bones in your body, too. Some of them are even relatively cuboid in shape. They're called molar teeth. I can think of bones with holes in them - the major one is called a skull, and is full-on hollow!
Conversely, if you want some up-close-and-personal photos, they each have napping spots where they can be found throughout the day. Although they seem to be restless sleepers, the rover's presence doesn't seem to disturb them.

Once you catch a few images of them at night (which typically will show them at a distance), you'll get a better feel for each of their territories, which in turn will help you narrow down their day locations. :)

Depending on how many night shots you've taken thus far, it's quite likely that you have already gotten some photos of them at a distance (but perhaps have not identified them as such). The XRI identification algorithm often will not be able to identify them at a distance, but if you look carefully, you can tell what they are. ;) If you haven't already, you can check some of the images on the Spot the Critter (http://forum.lazy8studios.com/index.php?topic=1026.0) thread for examples of what they look like at night from afar.

I don't want to spoil this part of the investigation for you (it can be a lot of fun trying to track them down), but if you need more help, let me know. :D

Once you reach the end of the game, do share your theories! (I have a feeling that whatever you're thinking now, it'll be a bit different by then)

Yeah I got to the point where I was in a video chat with Turing and now have to take six recordings to the monument. Yeah my theory about the obelisks seems to be dead, or maybe its not. Quite impressed with the plot. I want to rush through and complete the final few missions, but I also want to take my time lol.

Yeah, I actually have a picture somewhere where there are at least four different motobionts in the same pic.

Anyways, I just got to the part where my rover takes a swim. Interesting audio. And the picture is amazing. Wish it wasn't classified, I'd share it :)

:D If you ever encounter one of the several herds or flocks on Artocos Island, you will probably capture at least a dozen creatures in each photo!

However, such images typically are labeled "classified" by the XRI server, so are more difficult to share publicly.

Thanks to the hints here, I found the Razorback and Bulbmoss, so I think I have them all now :-)

I'm still at 40 tasks, but I got more awards. I'm now at 12.
• Score 95% or higher on your entrance exam
 • Invited a colleague to participate
 • Take your first panorama photo
 • Travel as far as light does in one microsecond (300m)
 • Take your first infrared photo
 • Tagged 3 different species in the same image
 • Travel as far as the Mars Spirit rover (7.73 km)
 • Scheduled a photo to be taken on Mae Jemisonís birthday (Oct. 17)
 • Travel as far as the Voyager 1 space probe does every second (17.043 km)
 • One of your photos was selected as a highlight by the science team
 • Scheduled a photo to be taken on Carl Saganís birthday (Nov. 9)
 • Tagged 5 distinct motile creatures

Are there any more birthdays? Do I have to play for 365 days to get them all?
How many am I missing?

I have a badge for Galileo's Birthday (Feb 15th)

There are also badges for Alan Turing's and Isaac Newton's birthdays.

I'm at 15 badges in total now.

It's sad that this topic is no longer active. It was so much exciting and I got a lot of useful information for my work that currently is reviewed by homework help (http://youresearchpaper.com/help-with-homework/) service. Anyway, it would be great if this topic will be active again.

I agree, but for that, there must be something to hunt again. Once you have tagged every kind of biont multiple times, it's kinda hard to find something to add to what is already here.

Personally, I drop by here to see if there is anything happening with the game development, and then I slink out again.
